National Center of Industrial Culture

At the foot of the blast furnaces in Belval, this new construction remains humble, leaving all the majesty to its imposing neighbour. However, its presence affirms a contemporary character, with proportioned volumes and monolithic geometry.

The massive basalt facade was implemented to blend in with its surroundings. Only the opening on the ground floor acts as a signal for entrance to the building which hosts events and exhibitions in the casting hall. It is also a link to the shops, restaurants and bars located in the basements.

BAUHÄREPRÄIS 2016
Jury comment:
It’s a clever move to reclaim the industrial wastelands of the past, breathing new meaning into them by directing them towards a new commercial destiny. A rich discovery of old technologies, restored to the present, given a new lease of life in design and sculpture; this achievment redefines the past by translating it into contemporary art.”
